Stripping diapers 101 from The Rash Specialist aka Dani from Baby Cotton Bottoms

OK....so she might not have the name tag that says Rash Specialist and she may even laugh knowing that I call her that but she holds a mean grudge against rashes. She takes a no holds bar approach and is FIRM about how to rid babies of their rashes.
Danika on twitter had heard my exasperated attempts at trying to clear Kingsley's rash..only for it to come back with bells on. She recommended that I contact Dani, (Baby Cotton Bottoms) through her online contact form on her website. I was semi-familiar with her site since I was "owl-hunting" on it for the Great Cloth Diaper Hunt, just a few weeks prior. Dani immediately responded and fired off LOTS of questions.....are you sure it's yeast? Has it been tested? What diapers are you using? What have you tried? She informed me that if it was bacteria and I was treated it as yeast, that I was in fact FEEDING the bacteria and visa versa.

She informed me that vinegar does not cure...it feeds.
Dr. Smith's which is zinc-based has boric acid. DRYING out the rash but not curing it.
The TTO...I was using? Could have been killing her natural womanly flora since I was adding it to bath water....and we know where the water goes;)
She recommends Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottoms Balm.

So, these emails are shot back to back quickly and VERY detailed. She even asks if she can CALL me!
(The day BEFORE Thanksgiving!!)

Now, Dani, is working closely with the CDC in Atlanta because she is writing a book! She called out a few detergent products, which I will NOT name but I will list what she DOES recommend. AND because Kingsley is now rash free, I trust her.
END OF STORY.

She likes Allen's,
Bum Genius (which is a country save partnership)
and
the new Thirsties (which has the anti-bacterial agent)

Lots of detergents are new or haven't been tested enough or are simply NOT cleaning the diapers the right way.

She asked about how I was storing dirty diapers, liners and wipes? If I had attempted sterilizing changing pad covers, blankets and washcloths? Bacteria LIVES! And I never thought that one tiny bad bacteria could be living in her changing pad cover or a cloth liner!

Now we move to stripping.
BOIL
All but your PUL covers
Like you would boil pasta....10 minutes
then dump in washer add detergent and wash.

FOR PUL :
Using one of the 3 detergents above use 1 scoop and add 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach wash on your HOTTEST water that your thermostat has.
MAKING SURE YOUR DIPES ARE 1ST CLEAN not DIRTY!
Then repeat.
1st time takes a layer off the fungus...2nd time KILLS it.
Then rinse rinse rinse. Till they smell like cloth again!
Make sure you don't overfill the washer. Give them room to float around.

Don't forget using a NON-RESIDUE detergent is the way to go. Choosing the wrong detergent, may cause the process to fail.

This should clear up all ammonia issues as well, I assume, for those JUST battling that issue!

Till December 2nd Baby Cotton Bottoms has FREE shipping on everything in store by using HOLIDAY as your coupon code.
So go grab one of these 3 detergents with FREE shipping
(you won't find that ANYWHERE!)
No minimum purchase required.

I know this should work for you too!

The infamous RASH (Ruby Pinwheels review)

If you really know me and follow me on twitter...then you know I have been dealing with rash. Lots and lots of diaper rash. I assumed it was yeast when it was just on Zealand and we dealt with it appropriately with Nystatin creams and Bourdeaux. It got worse each time he had a bowel movement. I had been told by a pharmacist friend to mix equal parts nystatin cream, mylanta (or Maalox) and Desitin. I mixed it up and slathered it on. Only to find out that Desitin creamy isn't even approved for baby's skin per @thesmartmama. You will have to ask her all the details but I totally trust her on being green, cause that is her thing! I took Zealand to the Pediatrician, where we were told bacteria. We were given bactriban orally and topically. At this point, Kingsley's rash was just starting to surface. NOONE told me not to bathe them together....never even thought about it, ya know! Kingsley followed in to the Pediatrician the next week or two after I couldn't clear that up.
Both rashes cleared and I was thankful for about 7 days.
Kingsley's came back with a vengeance.
I tried ALL of the following: Nystatin cream, the homemade triple cream, liquid acidophilus, coconut oil, Dr. Smith's diaper cream, Tea Tree Oil (in baths, laundry and even dabbed directly on spots) Grapefruit seed extract (in wipe mix and in sippy cups), Vinegar (also in baths and in wipe mix and laundry). I bleached the diapers and changed detergents numerous times.
At simultaneous times, I was given the opportunity to chose a product from Ruby Pinwheels to review while I was working with a "Rash Specialist"
(I will talk about her in a later post if anyone is interested).
The "RS" said they ONLY cream she recommends is the Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm. that the others contain zinc which is just a barrier. She works closely with the CDC on testing baby products and the ingredients that are used in them.
I talked to her via email and then phone! (She called me!)
Kingsley was put back on the prescription cream Bactriban with directions to apply 2x a day for 7 days. ALL 7 days. If it gets worse, then we will attempt oral medications but the WHOLE reason, I went to such extremes with the organic and holistic remedies was I did not want to her to have oral antibiotics. We also switched to Earth Mama Angel Baby cream to use on all other changes and we switched to disposable diapers.
We made the switch on Thursday.
Today is Sunday.
ALL GONE!!
I'm not a gambler....only because I hate to lose....but I am pretty confident that Earth Mama Angel Baby cream had something to do with it!
Ruby Pinwheels sells all organic, so you know you can trust what you get from them, starting with Earth Mama Angel Baby products.
I don't want to shop somewhere that sells bad products mixed in with good ones because it makes money...I wanna shop somewhere that sells only good products because they believe in them and they care what I put on MY baby.

Right now Ruby Pinwheels has 20% off their site....probably won't last long!

Bravado Essential Nursing Tank Review and GIVEAWAY! CLOSED

With Zealand, there was just so much to read and search! I needed a carseat, a stroller a crib! I however did not pre-shop for a nursing bra or nursing clothing at all! Gap sells medela (but not the Gap here locally) so I went with Target and Wal-mart bras. I eventually travelled to the Gap that sells maternity and bought 2 nursing bras. I bought the soft ones without underwire because I had heard that the underwire could cause issues with breastmilk and lead to possible mastitis. The bras, did the trick, they held them up but it was not pretty. It was not supportive and they literally fell apart with each wash. They were not made to last for as long as I wanted to nurse. They were made of nursing bra FAIL.
There wasn't much time between Zealand nursing and the arrival of Kingsley and I had ALOT of researching to do. I found Bravado and their nursing tanks and I found them ON SALE! Not everything that costs alot, is worth it as I had just found out with the Medela bras. I also wanted a bra that I didn't have to change mid day; due to where I was going or what I was doing. So, I bought two from the babycenter.com store before they closed down. I should have bought 10, if I would have known then, what I know now.
Right after I got home from the hospital I started wearing them. I love the way the tank cradled my belly and helped it not jiggle, it kept it secure and I liked it. There was quite a bit of cleavage that peeked out of the top of the size I had purchased but hey anyone that has a D/DD tank surely has that issue. I love how trim the tank is and that I can throw a shirt on top of it and not only feel supported, I feel good! My belly never, ever hangs out when I'm nursing, noone ever sees a thing! I have since purchased more in an E/F which has about an inch more fabric in the v part of the neckline....which although the fit is a tad looser than the D/DD, it shows almost zero cleavage and is nice when I am only wearing the tank.
I am one of those people that wears a tank under all my shirts anyway, even before I ever got pregnant. This is THE way to do that. I can not even remember a day in the last 11 months that I have not worn this tank. The "girls" are just exactly where they need to be snug as a bug with AWESOME support!! I now have 5 and I wish I had more. I hang dry them, in hopes that they may last me as long as Kingsley wants to nurse.
Quick breakdown: very supportive even for LARGE bewbs and made to last!
Can you tell I LOVE them?

I contacted Bravado, told them how much I loved them and they generously offered my readers a chance to win one too!

Livie and Luca review and coupon code

I saw these shoes...and fell in love. I knew I had to have them one way or another. I contacted Livie and Luca to do a review and she was so quick with a "yes" that I was on shock. Clearly these shoes spoke for themselves, clearly they didn't need someone to review these beautiful shoes!

They arrived in an adorable bag. (Yeah, for saving a tree) The smell of the leather permiated it's surroundings. I took a big whiff. Yep, real leather. Covered with an adorable owl. I showed them to Zealand and he was equally excited (well, not equally because I was REALLY excited)

I have him wear them with everything. I dress these shoes up and down. He has worn them with capri khakis and his fancy corduroys. I love the brown base that matches everything he owns. I LOVE how the ankle strap is almost a high top, supporting his ankle. I love that because they are SOOO soft that even though they are almost 2 sizes too big (Stride rite says to do that?) he NEVER complains about these shoes.

He complains about his Robeez and refuses to wear them. And I thought that Robeez were soft and flexible (and they are) but they are NOTHING compared to Livie and Luca. These shoes are so amazing that I can almost guarantee that if you bought 1 pair you would buy from them again.
I know that I MOST certainly am going to be a life long customer of theirs.

I am so sorry to announce that I do not have a giveaway for this shoe but Livie and Luca did generously give me a coupon code for 10% off your purchase not including their sale shoes.

Bamboo Bums review AND $25 Bum Bucks PLUS 15% off code by Betsy

DUE TO HOLIDAY I AM EXTENDING GIVEAWAY TILL NOVEMBER 30TH!

CONGRATS #57 on your win!!!

I should start this by telling you that we co-sleep and my 11 month old DS nurses throughout the night still. I didn’t start using cloth until my DS was about 6 months old. We use gDiapers during the day and love them but they cannot hold up overnight. I tried a few different cloth diapers trying to find one that would work well without looking ridiculously huge.

My dear friend, Danielle, introduced me to the Bamboo Bum. My first thought when I touched this diaper was “O my, this is sooooo soft! Can I get undies made out of this??” Lol.

I immediately prepped them for that night’s trial.

There are quite a few snaps on the Bamboo Bum in order to get a perfect fit on any size baby so it’s a little tricky to do it for the first time on a wiggler like mine but I got him into it.

The Bamboo Bum comes with a regular and a super sized soaker included so I used the longer overnight soaker and put him to bed. The next morning (a solid 12 hours later!), the sheets were dry and we were both very happy campers!

Since that day, I try to put him in Bamboo Bums every night and I’m sad when he has to wear another brand to bed (and I put 3 inserts in other brands because I don’t trust them so DS looks very big butted!)

Not only does this fit my DS now at 25 pounds, it would have fit him at 8 and will continue to fit him up to possibly 40!! Plus, we can use this next summer as a swim diaper and the summer after that as a trainer!!

Bamboo Bums come in a variety of yummy colors-I just placed an order for 2 more and can’t wait until they get here! And did you know that bamboo is both anti-fungal and anti-microbial? Made right here in the USA by a WAHM and a WAHG (Grandmother;))

Take a look around she carries prefolds, wetbags, pail liners, wipes and MORE!!

Bamboo Bums is offering you the readers 15% off

her store by using the code zealrev until December 15th

You can enter to win $25 in bum bucks here!

Meet BETSY.....my new guest co-blogger!!

I have been incredibly busy with the ins and outs of life that I wanted to bring in another reviewer to get more products to you on a more regular basis! After all... the more reviews we get to do, the more giveaways for you! Betsy is a great friend of mine that I met in our local lactation mom's group. Her son in 4 days older and 10 pounds heavier than my dainty Kingsley! We have alot in common and she is not only hilarious but a really great person.

Betsy is going to introduce herself and then do her first review and giveaway following this post!

Let's all welcome Betsy!

Hi, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Betsy. I am a 34 year old first time mom to a fabulous 11 month old baby boy. I am a full time Mommy, part time Dog Groomer, part time student = all the time busy! I am a breastfeeding, cloth diapering, baby-wearing mama who is trying to get through life while having fun and not leaving a huge carbon footprint behind for my son! I share my home (and life) with my husband of 2 years, a French Bulldog and 3 cats. Life is never dull around here! I look forward to hearing from the followers of this blog and reviewing some great products for great giveaway fun!

Day 7: Keiki Kuddlerz Ring Sling

I won this sling from Mom Smart's blog and I was stoked! I chose the retro floral pattern Keiki Kuddlerz, cause that is how I roll....and I waited and waited and waited. Turns out not only is the company based in Hawaii but she didn't respond to quite a few emails and after all I had waited over a month to tell the blogger that I hadn't received it yet. So...one thing on top of the other, it took 3 months to get it and this buildup and anxiety to get it, burst while waiting. Kingsley will be 1 next month (EEK) and I just feel most supported with her in the Ergo.

So, I pass on to you this brand new in package ring sling....in the yummiest of pattern!
Retail value : $50

TADA!!! My gifts to you....I hope you enjoy them!

Kingsley is at the perfect age for my ergo and I don't wanna mess up a good thing. I have had problems with shells of this type in the past, where they don't fit over my chest or comfortably on my shoulders. So, I thought instead of taking it out of it's cute packaging, I would give it to of you that REALLY wants it! Cause really, it is so damn cute!

Best Buds!

I'm gonna have some great reviews and giveaways coming up soon! I just need to write them up!

I love the cooler weather as south Georgia is UNBEARABLY hot in the Summer which makes outside playing really rough! Now that we are down in the 70s, we are getting some vitamin D the old fashion way.

I love how Zealand puts his arm around Kingsley as if he is protecting her and every time the door would open (since they are squeezed in there) he would reach over and shut it so she wouldn't fall out. He really, truly loves her. I just love their dynamic together.

Clementine NW Review

I purchased Adiri baby bottles from Clementine Northwest when they had a KILLER sale on the 3 pack. They also were running a cute giveaway where of you found certain items throughout their store that were priced at $0 you could just add them to the cart! I received a cute travel baby cleaning set and an adorable book/game for FREE plus I added a free shipping coupon code! I loved how their box came, with their own personalized sticker, like you were opening up a present instead of a purchase.
Unfortunately nothing was as good as the boob and Kingsley denied these bottles, so I have 2 of the 3 up for sale on ebay.....but not Clementine NWs fault but mine for my damn attachment parenting:)
I contacted them recently to see if they wanted to do a review and they asked what I was interested in at their store. I am interested in EVERYTHING. All of their products are organic and environmentally friendly.....and CUTE and TRENDY! Even the box and ribbon they ship in is recycled.
They sent me Baby's First Blocks, since Kingsley had just started to play with Zealand and I wanted something to review for both of them. These blocks are staple pieces. Timeless and built to pass on to another generation. I love that they are made with water based non-toxic lacquers and maple wood. I LOVE that even though I got them for free that I would and could actually buy them as they are ONLY $14.95!
I really would love to weed out our toys. I would love to have ALL environmentally friendly wooden, paper or knitted toys. How do I tell Zealand that he would have to get rid of his pirate ship and John Deere tractors? I won't but I can make the effort to buy quality over quantity and buy environmentally friendly products for them and for others that I buy for. Baby steps!
Head over to Clementine NW, you will not be sad you did! Pick up something for Mom or baby at really affordable prices!
